The Ultimate Manga Reading Guide: Best Manga Recommendations for Beginners

Jenny June 12, 2026
Share

Here at Bookinfluencers, we love all types of literature, and graphic novels and manga are no exception! Manga is an incredibly versatile and expressive medium, yet it is a form of literature that many traditional readers overlook. Perhaps they aren’t sure what to read, don’t know where to start, or feel a bit intimidated by the unique right-to-left reading format.

If you are looking for the best manga recommendations for beginners, our creator network has you covered. We spoke to some of our amazing community members to ask them why they fell in love with the medium and which exact series you should pick up first.

Why We Love the Medium of Manga

We spoke to some of our community’s manga creators—Elias, Adam, and Jack—to chat about why this unique medium deserves a permanent spot on your bookshelf, and what their top recommendations are for manga beginners.

For anyone who has never picked up a manga before, it can seem a little intimidating. What is it about manga that keeps you hooked?

Elias (@Chill_with_eli): What I love most about manga is its ability to make ordinary moments feel incredibly meaningful. Whether it’s a story about a samurai searching for purpose, an athlete chasing a dream, or someone simply learning how to connect with others, manga has this unique way of exploring very human experiences. It blends unforgettable artwork and storytelling to make you look at your own life a bit differently.

Adam (@corkycosplays): I completely agree on the storytelling front, but for me, it’s also about the sheer lack of boundaries! I love manga and graphic novels because of how immersive these worlds can be. From romance to fantasy to the outright absurd, there are absolutely no rules, and that freedom lends itself to some of the most creative stories you will ever read. Plus, as a creative myself, getting to see so many different and unique art styles in one medium is just so cool.

Jack (@sensei_jackjack): That artistic freedom is huge. I love the sheer diversity of the stories we get from manga. But what makes it a real game-changer for a lot of readers is how the story is told. Because so much of the narrative is driven beautifully through the art itself, you can actually get through a deeply engaging, massive story at a much faster pace than a traditional novel!

Best Dark Fantasy & Psychological Thriller Manga

For readers transitioning from traditional novels to graphic literature, these picks offer high stakes, complex philosophy, and gripping psychological tension, these are the best manga recommendations for beginners.

Oshi no Ko by Aka Akasaka & Mengo Yokoyari

  • Genre: Psychological Drama / Supernatural Thriller
  • Recommended by: Ben (@mangaflows)
  • The Hook: A dark, satirical look at the glittering yet cutthroat world of Japanese idol culture, entertainment, and celebrity secrets.
  • Why Read It: “If you’ve ever thought about idol culture and the entertainment scene’s dark history, then this series is for you. Packed with intense drama, heartwarming peaks, and heartbreaking twists, this series keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout.”

Berserk by Kentaro Miura

“It features the best written story and best art design in any manga I have ever read. The narrative is dark, brutal, and definitely not for the faint-hearted. It is a must-read for those who appreciate dark fantasy action, horror, and gut-wrenching plot twists.” – Lee (@Bigbaldmurph)

The Vibe: Dark Fantasy / Seinen Action

What it’s about: If you love gritty medieval fantasy, this epic follows Guts, a lone mercenary hunted by demons, on a harrowing quest for vengeance. “A dark, gritty fantasy that delves deep into the philosophy of oneself—questioning who the true hero is. Full of dark and sensitive topics, it’s a mature masterpiece that should be one of the top recommendations for all manga beginners.” – Ben.

Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue

  • Genre: Historical Fiction / Samurai Epics
  • Recommended by: Lee (@Bigbaldmurph) & Elias (@Chill_with_eli)
  • The Hook: A fictionalized, highly philosophical retelling of the life of legendary Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi.
  • Why Read It:
    • “Alongside Berserk, this is considered the absolute pinnacle of top-tier manga artwork. Set in feudal Japan, if you are into traditional Japanese culture, brutal action, and a compelling narrative, this is for you.” — Lee
    • “One of the most beautiful stories I’ve ever read. While it’s famous for its incredible artwork and samurai battles, what keeps me coming back is its exploration of growth, purpose, and what it truly means to become stronger. The older I get, the more I realize it’s less about fighting and more about learning how to live.” — Elias

Monster by Naoki Urasawa

“Murder conspiracy and thriller fans will absolutely love this. It is packed with mind-bending twists and turns that flip everything on its head, masterfully crafted by one of the greatest mangakas to ever live.” – Lee (@Bigbaldmurph)

Genre: Psychological Thriller / Crime Noir

What’s it about: A brilliant brain surgeon saves the life of a young boy mysteriously shot in the head, only to discover years later that the boy has grown into a charismatic, sociopathic serial killer.

Fist of the North Star by Buronson & Tetsuo Hara

  • Genre: Post-Apocalyptic / Martial Arts Action
  • Recommended by: Lee (@Bigbaldmurph)
  • The Hook: A legendary martial artist traverses a radioactive wasteland to rescue his fiancé from rival warlords.
  • Why Read It: “Brutal action that directly inspired modern giants like JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Berserk. This wild martial arts epic set in a Mad Max-style world is bound to draw action lovers right in.”

Top Fantasy Manga & Whimsical World-Building

If you are a fan of high fantasy novels, these series offer magical world-building, high-stakes adventures, and stunning visual landscapes. Fantasy is a common access genre if you are looking for beginners manga recommendations.

Witch Hat Atelier (High Fantasy / Magic Realism)

Recommended by Ben (@mangaflows), Elias (@Chill_with_eli), and Adam (@corkycosplays), this series captures the pure wonder of discovering a new world better than almost any fantasy manga on the shelves. The story follows Coco, a normal village girl who accidentally uncovers the secret of how magic is drawn, forcing her to enter a hidden world of spell-craft. Kamome Shirohama’s artwork is utterly breathtaking and beautifully detailed at every single turn, masterfully balancing dark moments of despair with pure joy, wonder, and hope. If you want a story that handles magic, creativity, and responsibility in a way that feels both whimsical and deeply thoughtful, this stunning masterpiece is the perfect place to start.

Yona of the Dawn by Mizuho Kusanagi

  • Genre: Romantasy / Adventure Epic
  • Recommended by: Ben (@mangaflows)
  • The Hook: The beloved Princess Yona is forced to flee her kingdom after a sudden coup, embarking on a quest to find the reincarnations of the four legendary dragons to help reclaim her throne.
  • Why Read It: “A fantastic Romantasy series. Watching Yona go on the run with her childhood bodyguard, Hak, is intense and action-packed, but filled with genuinely warm, cozy moments.”

If you love The Lord of the Rings or cozy, introspective fantasy… Read Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

  • Why it fits: Instead of focusing on the battle to save the world, this story beautifully explores what happens after the grand adventure is already over. It mixes a cozy fantasy vibe with a legendary, decades-spanning journey.
  • The Story: The narrative follows Frieren, an immortal elf mage who outlives her heroic human companions. Left behind by time, she embarks on a retrospective journey across the land to better understand humanity and the true value of the moments we share.
  • Why you should read it: Adam (@corkycosplays) notes that no story makes you think about life with such a distinct perspective, serving as a poignant reminder to cherish the time you have with loved ones. On a list of manga recommendations for beginners, Frieren has to be on here.

My Hero Academia by Kohei Horikoshi

  • Genre: Shonen / Superhero Fantasy
  • Recommended by: Adam (@corkycosplays)
  • The Hook: In a world where 80% of the population possesses superpowers called “Quirks,” a powerless boy inherits the abilities of the world’s greatest hero.
  • Why Read It: “Horikoshi’s character design instantly hooks you. It starts centered around school life and growing stronger before shifting to a much darker, high-stakes tone. Now that the epic manga run has officially concluded, the ending feels incredibly fulfilling. It features a massive, diverse cast of relatable characters.”

Mashle: Magic and Muscles by Hajime Komoto

  • Genre: Action Comedy / Magical Parody
  • Recommended by: Lee (@Bigbaldmurph)
  • The Hook: Born without magic in a world where magic status determines everything, young Mash relies entirely on his absurdly over-trained muscles to survive school.
  • Why Read It: “Magic fans rejoice! This magical comedy will 100% make you belly laugh while completely scratching that wizarding world itch. It’s an easy, accessible read for everyone.”

Fangs (Vampire Drama / Boys’ Love)

Recommended by Jack (@sensei_jackjack), this series is an excellent pick for adult readers looking for an immersive supernatural story with rich, contemporary world-building. The narrative follows a newly turned vampire who is taken under the wing of a veteran mentor, navigating the complex rules and politics of a highly regulated vampire society. Beyond its compelling romance, the series stands out for its fantastic urban settings and deep, beautifully developed characters. If you love dark urban fantasy, intricate lore, and a sophisticated approach to supernatural drama, this is a must-read.

Must-Read Romance & Contemporary Slice-of-Life Manga

From lighthearted crushes to deeply realistic representations of disability and queer relationships, these contemporary stories offer immense emotional depth to round off our list of manga recommendations for beginners.

A Sign of Affection by Suu Morishita

“Perfect for someone who loves wholesome, endearing love stories that feature accurate, realistic, and respectful disability representation.” – Jack (@sensei_jackjack)

The Vibe: Contemporary Romance / Disability Representation

What it’s about: A pure, heartwarming love story centered on Yuki, a deaf college student, and Itsuomi, a multilingual world traveler. When their paths cross, Itsuomi actively begins learning sign language to communicate with her, leading to a deeply respectful and endearing romance.

Sweat and Soap by Kintetsu Yamada

  • Genre: Adult Workplace Romance
  • Recommended by: Adam (@corkycosplays)
  • The Hook: An office worker insecure about her hyperhidrosis falls in love with her cosmetics company’s top product developer and scent designer.
  • Why Read It: “A romance about adults who actually talk through their problems when they arise! You see the realistic ups and downs as well as small, intimate moments. Going from volume one to the finale had me in absolute tears on the last page.”

My Dress-Up Darling by Shinichi Fukuda

  • Genre: Romantic Comedy / Cosplay Culture
  • Recommended by: Ben (@mangaflows)
  • The Hook: A lonely high school boy who crafts traditional Japanese dolls teams up with a popular, charismatic girl to help design her favorite cosplay outfits.
  • Why Read It: “A mature, character-driven romance focusing on the cosplay community. It handles complex topics like beauty standards and embracing one’s inner geek very maturely, making for a thrilling romance.”

Our Dreams at Dusk by Yuhki Kamatani

  • Genre: LGBTQ+ Drama / Slice of Life
  • Recommended by: Jack (@sensei_jackjack)
  • The Hook: A closeted teenager finds solace, community, and acceptance at a local drop-in lounge run by an enigmatic woman.
  • Why Read It: “Highly recommended for anyone looking for incredible, nuanced queer representation wrapped inside fantastic all-around storytelling.”

She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat by Sakaomi Yuzizaki

  • Genre: Girls’ Love (GL) / Comfort Slice of Life
  • Recommended by: Jack (@sensei_jackjack)
  • The Hook: Two young professional women living in adjacent apartments bond over a shared love of cooking massive meals, slowly realizing their deeper feelings for one another.
  • Why Read It: “Great for readers who love GL but also crave stories dealing with deep contemporary topics, rich representation, and beautifully written characters.”

If you like Daisy Jones & The Six or Fleabag, Read Nana by Ai Yazawa

  • Why it matches: Much like Daisy Jones, Nana is a brilliant, fashion-forward look at the intoxicating and destructive nature of fame, rock music, and relationships. If you love stories about complex, beautifully flawed women trying to find their footing in the city, this is a must-read.
  • What’s it about: Two entirely different young women who share the same first name meet on a train to Tokyo. They unexpectedly become roommates and navigate the chaotic worlds of the punk rock music scene, complex romance, and early-twenties adulthood.
  • What our community says: “Highly recommended for someone who loves a lot of drama, messy relationships, and a LOT of trauma. You will absolutely fall in love with these characters, even when they make terrible choices.” – Jack (@sensei_jackjack)

Sports Drama & Historical Fiction

Manga excels at taking unique themes, like mountain climbing or competitive soccer, and turning them into incredibly deep psychological studies.

Vinland Saga by Makoto Yukimura

  • Genre: Historical Action / Philosophical Drama
  • Recommended by: Elias (@Chill_with_eli)
  • The Hook: A young Viking warrior goes on a bloody quest for revenge against his father’s killer, eventually learning the heavy, harrowing cost of violence.
  • Why Read It: “This is one of the most powerful redemption stories I’ve ever encountered in any medium. It masterfully explores revenge, forgiveness, and the painful process of becoming a better person. I recommend it for readers looking for mature storytelling and emotional depth.”

Blue Lock by Muneyuki Kaneshiro & Yusuke Nomura

  • Genre: Psychological Sports / Battle Shonen Style
  • Recommended by: Elias (@Chill_with_eli)
  • The Hook: To win the World Cup, Japan gathers 300 youth strikers and locks them inside a high-tech facility to eliminate each other and birth the ultimate, completely egoistic forward.
  • Why Read It: “Completely reinvents the sports formula. Its intense competition, memorable characters, and incredible pacing make it one of the most exciting, addictive reading experiences available today.”

The Climber by Shin-ichi Sakamoto & Yoshio Nabeda

  • Genre: Psychological Drama / Mountain Climbing
  • Recommended by: Elias (@Chill_with_eli)
  • The Hook: A troubled, solitary young man discovers a singular, obsessive passion for professional solo sport climbing.
  • Why Read It: “A deeply introspective story about solitude, burning ambition, and self-discovery. The hyper-detailed artwork creates an experience that feels almost meditative. It leaves a lasting emotional impact.”
