Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman is everywhere right now. It is a story that doesn’t fit cleanly into a traditional category. Is it sci-fi? Is it fantasy? Readers are turning to a distinct term to describe it: LitRPG.

If you are curious about this game-infused subgenre filled with stats, levels, and unexpected quests, this guide covers everything you need to know about LitRPG books, how the genre started, and where to begin reading.

What Are LitRPG Books? (Definition and Key Characteristics)

LitRPG is short for Literary Role-Playing Game. It is a fiction subgenre that combines traditional tabletop RPG mechanics (such as Dungeons & Dragons) with sci-fi and fantasy storytelling. In these novels, game-like mechanics aren’t just background fluff; they form the core structure of the plot.

Core elements of LitRPG books include:

• Game-Like Settings: The story takes place inside a virtual reality MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game), a digital simulation, or a real fantasy world governed by explicit game system rules.
• Proactive Protagonists: The main character operates within these rules. They earn experience points (XP), complete quests, unlock skills, and level up.
• Visible RPG Statistics: The narrative incorporates explicit status screens, level-up notifications, and character attributes like Strength, Intelligence, or Hit Points (HP).
• Interactive Storytelling: Some titles incorporate choose-your-own-adventure mechanics or paths, allowing readers to alter the narrative’s direction.

When Did LitRPG Start? (A Brief History)

While Dungeon Crawler Carl brought the genre into the mainstream spotlight, LitRPG books have deep roots in classic speculative fiction and gaming history:

• Quag Keep by Andre Norton (1978) – One of the earliest novels featuring characters pulled directly into a D&D campaign world.
• Dream Park by Larry Niven and Steven Barnes (1981) – Explores a high-tech, futuristic live-action role-playing game (LARP).
• Fighting Fantasy series by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone (1982) – Pioneered single-player gamebooks with interactive dice-rolling mechanics.
• 1/2 Prince by Yu Wo (2004) – A popular Taiwanese light novel series set inside a hyper-realistic virtual reality MMORPG.

What Is the Difference Between LitRPG and GameLit?

Before diving into pure LitRPG, it helps to understand GameLit. While LitRPG focuses heavily on visible mechanical systems, numerical progression, and character stats, GameLit is a broader umbrella term for stories centered on video games, e-sports, and gaming culture without requiring numerical character sheets.

LitRPG vs. GameLit Comparison:

Feature	LitRPG (Literary Role-Playing Game)	GameLit (Game Literature)
Primary Focus	Explicit system mechanics, visible stats, and numerical progression	Broader themes surrounding video games, game developers, and gaming culture
Stat Screens	Features explicit character sheets, HP/XP notifications, and skill logs	Minimal to no visual stat tracking or numerical leveling
Setting Type	Virtual reality games, digital simulations, or stat-governed fantasy worlds	Real-world esports arenas, game design studios, or narrative VR worlds
