When you think of books with bunnies on the cover, your mind might instantly jump to Lewis Carroll’s timeless classic Alice in Wonderland or Mona Awad’s viral BookTok horror sensation, Bunny. But why do rabbits feature so frequently in cover design across wildly different genres?

Before diving into our top reading recommendations, let’s explore what rabbits symbolize in art and literature—and why designers love putting them on front covers.

Quick Guide: Featured Books & Their Bunny Themes

The Artistic Symbolism of Rabbits on Book Covers

You might not immediately pause to consider why there is a rabbit featured on a book jacket, but the artistic history behind the imagery is rich and multifaceted:

• The Uncanny Duality: Modern and surrealist art—from Jeff Koons’ balloon sculptures to dark horror fiction—uses the rabbit’s innocent image to mask dark themes, entrapment, or consumer culture.
• Innocence and Vulnerability: In children’s illustrations and romance, rabbits represent softness, youth, and pure intent.
• Fertility and Rebirth: Springtime and Easter traditions tie rabbits directly to new beginnings, vitality, and desire.
• Cunning and Trickery: In Native American and African folklore, the hare is often a clever trickster who outsmarts larger predators through wit and deception.
