You only need to open BookTok, Bookstagram, or BookTube, and you will immediately see unboxings and hauls of Advanced Reader Copies (ARCs) tagged with “AD:PR.” Many bookish creators receive these gifted titles in exchange for a social media feature or unboxing. But when examining the ethics of free books, we have to ask: are these titles actually free?
A gifted book is rarely cost-free. For creators, the hidden costs include the unpaid time of reading, staging photos, and editing videos. For audiences, the hidden cost is potential bias, as viewers often assume a featured book carries a creator’s genuine personal recommendation rather than a PR obligation.
Why do readers and creators still crave these gifted titles, and is sending advance copies still the best marketing strategy for publishers?
Traditional book marketing relies heavily on sending out advance copies. Many are distributed digitally through platforms like NetGalley, and physical copies are sent directly to targeted creators. This approach is significantly cheaper than standard advertising, leveraging the organic word-of-mouth recommendations that social media algorithms favour.
However, this dynamic carries unspoken pressure. Publishers and PR agencies may track who does and does not post. Creators who accept physical books without generating content may be removed from future publisher PR lists.
In social psychology, receiving a gift creates a psychological urge to return the favour. In the book community, that favour usually takes the form of a glowing review or a prominent shout-out.
This creates an ethical dilemma when a creator doesn’t enjoy a title. Influencers build their audiences on trust. Expressing false enthusiasm undermines that credibility, but sharing a critical review risks frustrating the publisher or author.
To navigate the ethics of free books while maintaining audience trust, creators should adhere to industry-standard guidelines:
If you are an author, don’t let these ethical complexities discourage you from sending out ARCs. Pre-release copies remain one of the most effective tools for building pre-order momentum and driving initial buzz.
For creators, audience trust is your primary asset. Once compromised, it is remarkably difficult to rebuild.
Before posting a review that masks your true thoughts to keep a publisher happy, consider whether pleasing a brand is worth alienating your followers. To maintain professional relationships without being overly critical, consider dropping star ratings or focussing on who you would recommend the book to, instead of just saying that you did not like it.
