Mexico is a fascinating country made up of so many layers. Mexican voices are unique, and coming from a diverse and historical country, there is no surprise there.
If you visit Mexico, you’ll see modern architecture in Mexico City built on top of Aztec ruins, you’ll go from vibrant cities or popular beach resorts, to isolated deserts. Mexico is a place where the line between the living and the dead is famously thin, and the writers here know exactly how to walk it.
If you’re looking to add some Mexican flavour to your reading, look no further! We have 5 great books for you to really understand the Mexican Voices we love.

One of the most exciting Mexican Voices right now is Dahlia de la Cerda. Her collection, Reservoir Bitches (a title that immediately sets the tone), is a middle finger to the idea that Mexican women are just victims or secondary characters in narco-stories. These are stories about women who fight, swear, and survive. It’s gritty, it’s contemporary, and it’s amazing. If you like your prose sharp and your characters unapologetic, start here.

If you love classic gothics such as Rebecca, Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights, then you absolutely need to pick up Mexican Gothic.
Silvia Moreno-Garcia took the dusty tropes of Victorian horror and dropped them into the high-altitude mountains of Hidalgo. It’s 1950s socialite Noemí Taboada versus a house that is quite literally trying to consume her. It’s glamorous and terrifying, but beneath the horror, it’s a brilliant critique of colonialism. It’s the perfect “gateway” book if you’re new to books from Mexican voices.

If you’re going to understand Mexican Voices, you need to pick up Juan Rulfo. His masterpiece, Pedro Páramo, is a masterclass in magical realism. It’s a ghost story, but it’s so much more than that.
For a modern spiritual successor, pick up Yuri Herrera’s Signs Preceding the End of the World . At barely 100 pages, it’s a punch to the gut. It follows a young woman crossing the border, but Herrera writes it like an ancient mythic quest through the underworld. It’s haunting, beautiful, and deeply political.

If you want something purely contemporary and grounded in modern life, Everything She Never Knew is a great pick. Perfect for fans of Emily Henry or Kennedy Ryan, this book follows a woman whose best friend ran off with her husband and shows the aftermath of this.
With matriarchal strength and a second chance romance on the cards, this is a great read for romance readers.

Following the success of Vampires of El Norte , Cañas is back with a story set in a Mexican silver mine. It’s a mix of historical romance and a demonic mystery, but it leans more toward “atmospheric suspense” than jump-scare horror.
The Possession of Alba Diaz is about a young woman who has to turn to the one man she shouldn’t trust to save her soul. It’s high-stakes, romantic, and perfect for fans of the “haunted romance” trope.
Whether you’re looking to lose yourself in the high-stakes drama of the 1950s elite or want to feel the raw, unfiltered pulse of the modern streets, Mexico’s literary scene has something for you. Reading your way through a country is about more than just checking off titles; it’s about letting these voices challenge your assumptions and broaden your world.
